Starbucks and McDonald's to block porn on their WiFi networks

By Shawn Price

LOS ANGELES, July 18 (UPI) -- Starbucks and McDonald's are now blocking access to porn websites on their store WiFi networks due to the efforts of anti-porn groups.

Enough is Enough and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation prevailed upon the two fast-food restaurant chains to place filters in their store WiFi systems. McDonalds had already put filters in their British restaurants.

"Once we determine that our customers can access our free WiFi in a way that also doesn't involuntarily block unintended content, we will implement this in our stores," said a Starbucks spokesperson. "In the meantime, we reserve the right to stop any behavior that interferes with our customer experience, including what is accessed on our free WiFi."

EIE began pressuring McDonald's to make the change two years ago.

"Parents can have peace of mind that, when they or their children go to McDonald's, they will have a safer and more friendly WiFi experience, filtered from pornography, from child porn and from potential sexual exploitation and predation," said Donna Rice Hughes, EIE President.

The fast food giant said it wasn't aware of any incidences of children accessing porn in the restaurants through their WiFi networks, but made the change anyway.

"We are pleased to share that WiFi filtering has been activated in the majority of McDonald's nearly 14,000 restaurants nationwide, improving upon the restaurant experience for our customers," a McDonald's spokeswoman told Fortune.
