Lockheed Martin cuts 200 jobs in merger with Leidos

The reductions come as a result of Lockheed Martin's merger of its information systems division with that of Leidos.

BETHESDA, Md., April 22 (UPI) -- Aerospace company Lockheed Martin announced Friday it will reduce its information technology workforce by about 200.

The move comes as the Maryland-based company prepares to merge its IT services with Virginia-headquartered Leidos, another technology company with numerous Defense Department contracts. The $5 billion merger was revealed earlier this year.

Lockheed Martin laid off about 500 people six months ago.

The job cuts announced Friday are a part of the merger process, a company spokesman said. When the merger was announced, Lockheed Martin CEO Marilyn Hewson said it would allow the company "to focus on our core business in aerospace and defense." That focus includes development of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter plane.

The personnel reduction affects the company's Information Systems and Global Solutions division.
