TOKYO, March 3 (UPI) -- Tokyo's Nikkei index jumped more than 600 points Wednesday with the yen losing ground on the dollar.

At Wednesday's close, trading ended at 16,746 -- up 661 points, or 4.1 percent, over Tuesday.

The Topix index of all first-section issues finished at 1,349 -- up 48 points, or 3.75 percent. Tuesday it rose just under three points.

Tokyo stocks got a major boost from the rebound on Wall Street, as well as the Shanghai market, a weakening yen versus the dollar, and investor expectations of improving U.S. job news later this week.

Before closing, the Nikkei average briefly rose more than 700 points
