TOKYO, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Toyota Motor Corp. announced a recall of 2.87 million SUVs worldwide to correct a suspected rear seatbelt defect.

A fatal accident in Canada and another incident in the United States which resulted in a passenger's injury prompted the recall of 2006-2012 Toyota RAV4 models and 2012-2014 RAV4EV models, as well as Vanguard SUVs sold in Asia. In both cases, Toyota was unable to determine if a damaged rear lap-shoulder seatbelt caused the fatality or injury. In severe front-end collisions, the belts could be cut by metal seat-cushion frames, a Toyota statement said.

The recall affects 1.33 million vehicles in North America, 625,000 in Europe and 434,000 in China. The vehicle has been among Toyota's most successful in the North American market, only outsold by the Toyota Camry.

North American owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail, and additional information about the recall is available in the United States at 1-800-331-4331.
