Australia's Carlton Dry beer recalled over glass fears

By Ed Adamczyk

MELBOURNE, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- One million bottles of Australia's Carlton Dry beer have been recalled after the brewer received reports of broken glass in the bottles.

Carlton & United Breweries reported about a dozen complaints were received about a chip at the top of Carlton 335 milliliter bottles, made in October in its Yatala, Queensland, facility and sold across Australia. Company spokeswoman Jennifer Howard said the defect may have occurred during the bottling process.

The recall affects less than 1 percent of the brewery's annual production of about 240 million bottles.

"This sort of thing is rare but we take the quality of our beers seriously," a statement by the Melbourne-based company said.

The brewery is owned by SABMiller, which is planning a $100 billion merger with Anheuser-Busch InBev to form the world's largest beer company, owner of nine of the world's top 20 beer brands.
