Coca-Cola brand milk now in some stores

By Danielle Haynes

ATLANTA, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Coca-Cola's new super milk, Fairlife, has finally hit the shelves in select U.S. cities, the company announced Tuesday.

The soda company is responsible for the distribution of the milk, which is higher in protein, higher in calcium, lower in sugar and twice the price. Coca-Cola partnered with dairy farmers in Indiana to create Fairlife.

The milk is lactose-free, and comes from cows. The company uses filters to "take milk's nutrients and increase the ones we wanted, like protein and calcium, and decrease those we didn't want, like lactose and sugars," said Sue McCloskey, one of the dairy farmers in Indiana.

The milk -- available in whole, 2 percent, fat-free and 2 percent chocolate -- is available at major U.S. retailers, including Walmart, Target, Kroger and Safeway.

It has a 90-day shelf life compared to the 15 days of traditional milk.

While Coca-Cola has been touting the new line of milk for it's heightened nutritional value, not everyone is impressed with the idea.

"Milk is already an excellent nutritious beverage that does not require any engineering," Rebecca Solomon, director of clinical nutrition at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York City, told USA Today. "I fail to see why milk needs to be improved upon by the soda industry."
