MESQUITE, Nev., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Sen. Mike Gravel, D-Alaska, was named the new head of KUSH, a company that develops recreational and medicinal marijuana products.

Parent company Cannabis Sativa Inc., based in Mesquite, Nev., made the reorganization announcement Tuesday.

"I'm anxious to assist in bringing this important resource to a broader market in a serious and credible way," Gravel said of his new role.

Gravel served as senator for Alaska from 1969 to 1981 and was a critic of the so-called "War on Drugs," a news release from Cannabis Sativa said.

Gravel failed to earn the Libertarian Party's support for his presidential bid in 2008, his most recent try for office.
