MENLO PARK, Calif., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Facebook is now officially the owner for messaging app WhatsApp.

The social network announced the closing of the deal in documents filed the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

However, while Facebook may own the messaging app, it will continue to live on.

The company announced in February it will be shelling out big bucks to buy WhatsApp, $19 billion in cash and stocks.

Eventhough the FTC gave Facebook permission to buy the instant-messaging service the government said Facebook must continue WhatsApp's policy of not collecting usernames, locations, email address or other data. The FTC also said the company must not sell phone numbers to third parties.

Even with Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg and WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum promised no changes would be made, the FTC will be keeping an eye on the two companies, just in case.
