PlayStation 4 sales pass 6 million units

The PS4 has comfortably outsold its close rival, Microsoft's Xbox One, which has recorded sales of around 4 million units.

TOKYO, March 4 (UPI) -- Less than four months after its launch, Sony has sold 6 million PlayStation 4 gaming consoles, including 370,000 units sold in Japan in the last two weeks.

As of March 2, the company had sold 6 million consoles since its launch in November, boosted by a surge in sales after its Feb. 22 launch in Japan. Sony had fantastic sales in the first two weeks after the PS4 launched, selling nearly 2.1 million consoles. The console, which is now available across 57 countries, sold around 700,000 units in the last 30 days, after it reported that they had sold 5.3 million consoles as of Feb. 8.

Sony has also seen a significant rise in subscriptions to PlayStation Plus, its online service that gives users access to older games at a discount and lets them play multiplayer games online. The service costs between $10 for a month and $50 for a year.

Sony also mentioned its social achievements; more than a 100 million shares had been captured using the 'Share' button on the console's controller and more than 3.6 million gameplay broadcasts have been shared via the Twitch and Ustream platforms.

According to tech research firm NPD, the PlayStation4 was the best-selling gaming console in January. Sony claims thats its sales were nearly double that of its closest competitor. NPD says that Microsoft's Xbox One finished behind the PS4 for January.

Both consoles will be hoping for a big bump in sales after the launch of two highly anticipated games in March. Titanfall will be an exclusive Xbox One game and is a first-person shooter created by the developers of the popular Call of Duty franchise, and PlayStation 4 users will exclusively get to play inFamous: Second Son.
