December unemployment unchanged in eurozone, improved slightly in EU

BRUSSELS, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- The unemployment rate in the 18-member eurozone was unchanged in December but dropped one tick in the 28-member European Union, Eurostat said Friday.

Unemployment held at 12 percent in the eurozone, but fell from 10.8 percent to 10.7 percent in the EU, the agency that handles economic data for the European Commission said.

Eurostat said 26.2 million men and women in the EU were unemployed in December, 19 million of whom live in the 18-member region that shares the euro as currency.

In the EU, there were 162,000 fewer people listed as unemployed in December compared to November of last year. In the eurozone, there were 129,000 fewer, Eurostat said.

The lowest unemployment rate in the EU was Austria's 4.9 percent, followed by Germany at 5.1 percent and Luxembourg at 6.2 percent.

The highest rates were posted by Greece at 27.8 percent and Spain at 25.8 percent.
