A new Eastern Air Lines to fly out of Miami

MIAMI, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- A new company with an iconic name, Eastern Air Lines Group, said it would put down roots in Miami, former home of its namesake brand.

Eastern Air Lines Group purchased the defunct Eastern Air Lines intellectual property several years ago, giving it rights to the former company's name, the Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

This week it said it would start small, but open its headquarters in Miami, the same location of its predecessor's headquarters.

The former commercial airline, which ceased operations in 1991, was a major competitor serving domestic and international hubs.

"The Eastern Airlines name was synonymous with Miami International Airport and the Miami community for more than 70 years, so it's certainly exciting to see that this local icon is making a comeback," Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio Gonzalez said in a statement.

"We look forward to welcoming Eastern back to its historic home in the near future," he said.

The new airline expects to have licensing in place to start operating charter services for tour operators in 2014, the company said.
