Industrial capacity in Canada rose in third quarter

OTTAWA, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Canadian industrial capacity utilization rose in the third quarter, the government's data agency said Thursday.

Industries used 81.7 percent of their capacity in the third quarter, up from 81.1 percent in the second quarter, Statistics Canada reported.

Most of the gain was attributed to increased utilization in oil and gas extraction and in manufacturing, StatsCan said.

The industrial capacity utilization rate is the ratio of a sector's current output compared to what businesses could do going full steam.

In the third quarter, oil and gas extraction contributed 0.6 percentage point to the overall increase, which is more than half of the increase for the quarter.

Capacity utilization for the crude petroleum extraction rose 2.4 percentage points to 87.5 percent. For construction, capacity utilization rose 0.1 percentage point after three months of declines.
