NEW YORK, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- General Electric Co. has designated Tuesday as 3-D Printing Day, hoping to add to the technology's hype with 3-D-printed gifts designed by U.S. celebrities.
Tuesday was selected for the day because it's Dec. 3, or D3, the company said in a promotional video that says, "On D3, GE goes 3-D."
The contest starts at 10 a.m. EST Monday and runs until 10 a.m. Dec. 6 -- or when 200 winners are confirmed, whichever occurs first -- GE says in the official rules.
Contestants, who must be U.S. residents to win, can get a 3-D-printed gift, including a pen holder and iPhone 5 speakers, by selecting a gift prototype displayed on the contest's Tumblr social-networking page and sending their wish over Twitter, along with the hashtag #3DPrintMyGift.
GE will match the 200 winners with a computer-aided design expert to customize, print and ship the gift in time for the December holidays, the video says.
The celebrities involved, known as "influencers" in the contest, include TV weatherman Al Roker, reality TV host Stacy London, Boston Red Sox pitcher Craig Breslow and 3-D film animator David OReilly.
Companies and organizations include the Spotify Ltd. commercial music-streaming service and the Smithsonian Institution's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.
