Consumer confidence rose in Europe in July

BRUSSELS, July 23 (UPI) -- The European Commission said Tuesday consumer confidence rose solidly in the eurozone and the larger European Union in July compared to June.

In a flash estimate that could be revised, the commission said its consumer confidence indicators rose "markedly" in the month, climbing from minus 18.8 to minus 17.4 in the eurozone and from minus 17.5 to minus 14.8 in the European Union, which added Croatia as a 28th member on July 1.

A negative reading is normal. The long-term average for the index, dating to 2003, is minus 12.5.
