WASHINGTON, May 20 (UPI) -- Luxury sports car producer Maserati plans to recall 7,438 vehicles due to a possible rusting tie rod assembly issue, U.S. regulators said Monday.

The recall involves model year 2005-2008 Quattroportes, model year 2008 Gran Turismos and model year 2008 Alfa Romeo 8Cs.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Maserati North America Inc. is recalling the cars due to rear tie rod assemblies that "may have insufficient anti-corrosion material applied, allowing them to weaken and possibly fail."

If the parts fail, drivers could lose control of the cars, the agency said.

Maserati said it would notify owners and replace the tie rod assemblies.

The recall is expected to begin by the end of June.

Consumers can call Maserati at 1-877-696-2737 for information.
