LONDON, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Britain's Office for National Statistics Tuesday said the Index of Manufacturing rose by 2 percent in September on an annual basis.
The gain follows a 1.5 percent bump in August. From August 2011, manufacturing rose 0.2 percent, ONS said. The report issued Tuesday said eight of 13 manufacturing sub-sectors showed improvement in September with the largest gains in transportation equipment industries, where the index rose 6.1 percent.
Under transportation, manufacturing of vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers rose 13.9 percent.
The Index of Production, meanwhile, rose 0.7 percent in September 2011 compared to the same month a year earlier.
Production, which includes mining, output at utility companies, and water and waste management, saw a month-to-month decline in energy use, although energy use rose from September 2010.
In the mining sector, output was down 14.7 percent from September 2010, the 12th consecutive annual decrease.
Output in water and waste management rose 2.5 percent year to year and 0.9 percent from August to September.
