ROSELAND, N.J., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Payroll company Automatic Data Processing said Wednesday the private sector added 114,000 jobs to the economy in July
The figure showed the 38,000 jobs gained in May to be an anomaly, as job gains have returned to a pace of more than 100,000 per month for the past two months. However, ADP revised its estimate of jobs gained in June lower from 157,000 to 145,000. In addition, the figures are still shy of the numbers of jobs needed to move the 9.2 percent unemployment rate significantly lower.
ADP said small businesses added 58,000 jobs, while businesses with 50 to 499 employees added 47,000. Larger firms, those with 500 or more workers, added 9,000 jobs.
That pattern has held through the recovery, showing major corporations remain reluctant to hire.
ADP said service sector jobs gained by 121,000 in June, while goods-producing firms lost 7,000 jobs, the second decline in three months. Manufacturing in July lost 1,000 jobs after growing in seven of the last nine months.
For the third consecutive month, the number of construction jobs shrank. At the end of July, there were 11,0009 fewer construction jobs than when the month began.
Since January 2007, the construction sector has lost 2,135,000 jobs, ADP said.
