AMR Corp. places huge order for new planes

FORT WORTH, Texas, July 20 (UPI) -- AMR Corp. said it has placed the largest commercial aircraft order in history, splitting a purchase of 460 planes between U.S. and European companies.

In a statement released Wednesday, AMR, the parent company of American Airlines, said it has ordered 200 Boeing 737 single-aisle aircraft and 260 planes of comparable size from Airbus.

Half of the order from Boeing is for 737 planes with a new engine that will "offer even more significant fuel-efficiency gains over today's models," AMR said in a statement.

AMR said within five years it expects "to create the youngest, most fuel-efficient fleet among U.S. industry peers."

In addition to the order of mid-sized jets, which seat approximately 160, AMR said it "has plans to acquire 42 state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliners, to be delivered starting in late 2014."

On top of that, AMR said it has "firm orders" for seven 777-200 wide-body aircraft, which it expects to be delivered between 2013 and 2016.
