Smartphones overtake mobile device market

NEW YORK, June 30 (UPI) -- Market tracking firm Nielsen said smartphone sales had reached 55 percent of U.S. consumers purchasing a new mobile device.

In 2010, only 34 percent of consumers buying a new device opted for smartphones, PC Magazine reported Thursday.

Among network subscribers, 34 percent now use phones that are considered smartphones.

The Android operating system, developed by Google and available to phonemakers for free, is included in 38 percent of the smartphones while Apple's iPhone controls 27 percent of the market share.

RIM's Blackberry phone is not far behind the iPhone with 21 percent of the market.

Windows Mobile, a Microsoft product, commands 9 percent of the market share and Windows Phone 7, a recent release, has a market share of only 1 percent.

Hewlett Packard's WebOS and Symbian have 2 percent of the market with Palm at 1 percent, Nielsen said.
