Illinois says Motorola incentives worth it

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., May 7 (UPI) -- Illinois state officials say a $100 million package of financial incentives for Motorola Mobility is worth the investment.

Gov. Pat Quinn this week announced the incentives as a way to keep the smartphone company's corporate headquarters in Libertyville.

The quality of the jobs at stake, officials told the Chicago Tribune, made the incentives worthwhile.

"These are higher skilled, higher paying jobs than most projects," said a spokeswoman for the state's Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

The Tribune said Motorola Mobility has considered moving its headquarters to California or Texas.

Illinois' offer is the latest in a series of incentive deals Quinn has made to preserve jobs. Last year Navistar received a package valued at $64.7 million to remain in the state.
