NEW YORK, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- News Corp. said it had launched its new tablet-only digital news service, called The Daily, which has bureaus in New York and Los Angeles.

To start, The Daily is only available for owners of an Apple iPad, but that will change in time, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rupert Murdoch said.

This year, he said, "belongs to Apple," The Washington Post reported Wednesday. Expanding to other tablets could take a year or more, Murdoch said.

The Daily was designed especially for the computer tablets and has its own dedicated news staff, independent of other News Corp. organizations, such as the New York Post, The Wall Street Journal and Fox news

It will be available on a two-week trial basis, then by subscriptions, which cost 99 cents a week or $39.99 per year. Subscribers can also send links to individual stories to friends.

The Daily will feature advertising, which makes it a rare attempt for a major news media company to combine subscriber fees and advertising for revenue on the Internet, the Post said.

"Our aim is for The Daily to be the indispensable source for news, information and entertainment," Murdoch said.
