STANFORD, Calif., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Google said Thursday it will test a new ultra-high-speed Internet service in California at the homes of about 850 Stanford University faculty and staff members.
The San Jose Mercury News reported the network will be installed at the university's residential subdivision on the southeast edge of the campus, providing 1-gigabit-per-second, fiber-to-home broadband service. That's up to 100 times faster than current residential online connections.
The Internet giant, based in Mountain View, said in February it was looking for a community to serve as a guinea pig. Google product manager James Kelly said in a blog the Stanford community's layout and limited number of homes "make it a good fit for a beta deployment."
"And its location -- just a few miles up the road from Google -- will make it easier for our engineers to monitor progress," he wrote.
