SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Verizon's top executive, speaking in San Francisco, declined to confirm a report that Apple is working on an iPhone that can use Verizon's wireless technology.
Citing people briefed by Apple, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday the company plans to begin mass producing the smartphone by the end of the year. However, Verizon Chief Executive Lowell McAdam would not confirm the report, The Washington Post reported.
Speaking at a news conference in San Francisco, where the CTIA-The Wireless Association is holding its fall convention, McAdam said stories like that "roll out every few weeks," the Post reported. He said Verizon and Apple business interests "will align" at some point and if there is an announcement, Apple will make it.
The design of the new iPhone would resemble that of the iPhone 4 currently marketed by AT&T Inc., the Journal said. However, it would use the code division multiple access technology used by Verizon.
The Journal said its sources indicated the product would be released in the first quarter of 2011.
