CUPERTINO, Calif., April 5 (UPI) -- Apple Inc. said it sold 300,000 iPads on the first day of sales for its tablet computer, which made its debut in U.S. stores.

Sales began Saturday.

The figure was about half of what Apple analyst Gene Munster predicted, Business Insider reported Monday.

USA Today said "huge crowds" gathered at Apple Stores and stores in Chicago, New York and Atlantic City, N.J., all reported supplies were running low. A store in Los Angeles said Sunday it had only two units left, the newspaper said.

Munster said his estimate was high because he "misguaged the online pre-orders."

The analyst at Piper Jaffray lowered his sales estimate for the year from 5.6 billion iPads to 4.3 million.

Munster said the iPad's debut in stores was comparable to the iPhone on its first weekend. Apple sold 270,000 iPhones on "launch weekend" and 1.1 million in its first quarter, he said.
