CUPERTINO, Calif., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Apple Inc. says it will continue to remove software apps it deems too risque for its iPhone, iPod Touch and soon-to-be-released iPad devices.

"If we find these apps contain inappropriate material, we remove them and request the developer make any necessary changes in order to be distributed by Apple," the company said in a release.

Apple's stricter policy has included deletion of an app -- small software programs -- that showed animated photos of bikini models and another app for followers of a popular adult film actress, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

Last year, Apple removed the app Baby Shaker after bad publicity erupted over the software program, which simulated shaking an infant to death.

Apple's tighter restrictions appear to be part of an effort to clean up its App Store ahead of the shipping of its new iPad computer tablet, The Journal reported.

The App Store, which offers more than 140,000 programs, has been a key element in the success of the iPhone and is expected to be important in the marketing of the iPad, The Journal reported.
