DETROIT, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- U.S. automaker General Motors Co. said Thursday the current Buick GMC general sales manager Brian Sweeney would replace Michael Richards as head of brands.
Richards resigned last week after just nine days in his position, The Detroit News reported.
The management shake up started with the unexpected resignation of former Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson, who left abruptly with Chairman Edward Whitacre Jr. taking his job on an interim basis.
At the time, Whitman said GM needed to accelerate changes. Several younger executives were then moved up the ranks, while Vice Chairman Bob Lutz and vice president of engineering Mark Reuss were both named special advisers.
Last week, Chevrolet Vice President Brent Dewar unexpectedly resigned,
Sweeney said Thursday, "we've got great brands, strong products and a great future."
