NEW YORK, July 24 (UPI) -- General Motors has named a designer to be the next general manager of Cadillac, GM announced.

Bryan Nesbitt, vice president of GM North America Design, most noted for helping design the popular retro vehicle, the Chrysler PT Cruiser, will become the top executive of GM's top brand, reporting directly to the Vice Chairman Robert Lutz.

The Wall Street Journal says it is a surprising leap for a designer.

Nesbitt, born in Phoenix in 1969, joined General Motors in 2001 as head of design at Chevrolet.
