As many as 1,200 CBC jobs may be cut

OTTAWA, March 17 (UPI) -- The publicly funded Canadian Broadcasting Corp. is facing between 600 and 1,200 job layoffs, the country's heritage minister says.

In an interview with Sun Media in Ottawa, Minister James Moore said the CBC would receive its $1.1 billion as in the budget, but the Conservative government wouldn't come up with the requested additional $65 million to pay for layoff packages.

"I think the CBC has the capacity to do things within the envelope of the financial capacity that they have" that "would not have any impact on the public broadcaster in any way," Moore said.

However, CBC spokesman CBC spokesman Marco Dube said that wasn't as simple as it sounds. Under the Crown corporation's charter, any assets sold over $4 million must be approved by cabinet, and it was possible the CBC wouldn't see any of the proceeds.

Moore said the CBC had strayed from its mandate of showing Canadian content in a multitude of platforms and said it should return to it instead of being a "taxpayer-supported competitor to private broadcasters."
