A majority -- 56 percent -- also indicated disapproval of the $700 billion financial rescue passage rushed into law earlier this month and 58 percent indicated the concept of rescuing a big company with financial aid was a bad policy, the news service said.

Fifty-eight percent indicated a rescue package that helped homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages was a good idea.

In the Oct. 17-19 poll, which carried a margin of error of plus and minus three percentage points, 28 percent indicated they approved of Paulson's performance, CNNMoney said.
