Tech stocks big gainers on Wall Street


NEW YORK, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- U.S. stock indexes ended marginally up Wednesday, with technology stocks posting relatively big gains.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 0.56 points to 12,666.87 after hitting new intraday high above 12,700. The broader Standard & Poor's stock index gained 2.02 or 0.14 percent to 1,450.02.


On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,832 stocks advanced and 1,447 declined on volume of 2.7 billion shares.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index was up 19.01 or 0.77 percent to 2,490.50.

The U.S. Labor Department said fourth-quarter U.S. productivity was up 3 percent.

Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser said an improving economy might force the central bank to raise short-term interest rates.

In London, the FTSE 100 index closed up 23.20 points or 0.37 percent to 6,369.50.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index closed down 114.54 or 0.66 percent to 17,292.32, its lowest close since Jan. 17.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose 4/32, or $1.25 per $1,000 invested, to yield 4.74 percent. The 30-year bond was up 6/32, yielding 4.86 percent.

The U.S. dollar was at 120.645 yen from 120.12 yen at Tuesday's close. The euro was at $1.3012 from $1.2981 late Tuesday.
