Burberry fans want firm to stay in U.K.

LONDON, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Prince Charles has joined in the crusade against Burberry's plans to shut down its factory in Wales and move production to China.

Should the upscale fashion firm move its factory to China, where labor is cheaper, 300 local jobs will be lost, The Times of London reported.

Prince Charles' intervention is the latest in a series of moves to keep production of Burberry's "quintessentially British" products in Britain.

Among Burberry's fans are David and Victoria Beckham, Madonna and Kate Moss.

"Burberry advertises itself on its Web site as 'a luxury brand with a distinctive British sensibility,'" said Leighton Andrews, a Welsh assembly member. "If it wants to be seen as a British brand, it needs to keep manufacturing jobs in Britain."
