BRASILIA, Brazil, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Brazil decided to ban the import of Argentine beef following the discovery of foot-and-mouth disease on an Argentine ranch, Jornal do Brasil reported Thursday.

The cattle infected with foot-and-mouth, the extremely contagious illness affecting cows and other livestock, was said to be located on a ranch near Argentina's border with Paraguay.

Outbreaks of the disease have also occurred recently in Paraguay and neighboring Brazil.

Argentina, one of the world's largest beef exporters, suffered a similar outbreak of the disease five years ago.
