Disney denies plans for Beijing park

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The Walt Disney Company Tuesday denied a news report that Beijing planned to build a Disney theme park by 2010.

The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported Tuesday that Beijing's Development and Reform Commission had submitted a plan for the theme park to be located in the National New Media Base in the southern Daxing district of Beijing.

The newspaper said the plan would force Shanghai to withdraw a plan to set up a similar theme park.

However, the Walt Disney Company issued a statement denying the report. The company said it was still in talks with Shanghai authorities on building a park there, but no agreement had as yet been reached.

Disney's latest theme park opened in 2005 in Hong Kong, expecting to draw 40 percent of its visitors from mainland China. A similar park in Beijing would be a major competitor for mainland Chinese visitors.
