WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- The European Union's top trade official Tuesday blasted Congressional Democrats, and some Republicans, as some of the main obstacles to globalization.

Peter Mandelson, in Washington for trade talks with U.S. negotiators, challenged the Democratic Party to rediscover its commitment to free trade, MarketWatch reported.

"Democratic free traders seem to have taken to the hills. Unfortunately, they seem to be dragging a lot of Republicans now behind them," Mandelson said in a speech at the National Press Club.

Only 15 of 202 House Democrats voted for the Central American Free Trade pact last month.

Mandelson recently criticized the French government on similar grounds.
