Former WorldCom accountant gets hard time

NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- A New York judge Friday sentenced a former WorldCom accountant to five months behind bars for her part in the company's accounting fraud.

Besides the five-month sentence, accountant Betty Vinson also must serve five months of house arrest for her role in WorldCom's $11 billion bookkeeping debacle, CNN said. She pleaded guilty in October 2002.

U.S. District Judge Barbara Jones also sentenced a WorldCom manager, Troy Normand, to five years probation.

WorldCom filed the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history in 2002. Its former chief executive, Bernard Ebbers, was sentenced earlier this year to 25 years in prison for his part in wrecking the telecom giant.
