Morgan Stanley to drop 1,000 brokers

NEW YORK, July 28 (UPI) -- New York financial giant Morgan Stanley will cut some 1,000 brokers in its brokerage business, TheStreet.com reported Thursday.

The dismissals, which represent about one tenth of the bank's brokers, are part of Morgan Stanley's bid to boost profitability under newly installed chief executive John Mack.

"As we do throughout the firm, we must constantly review the performance of individuals in the retail group and identify those who are not up to our standards," said acting president Zoe Cruz in a memo to employees.

"As we move towards our new goals, we anticipate reducing the number of brokers by about 10 percent."
