Mint issues coin honoring Marine Corps

WASHINGTON, May 26 (UPI) -- The U.S. Mint has unveiled a new silver dollar honoring the Marine Corps' 230th anniversary.

It is the first coin minted to honor a branch of the military. Although it is legal tender, it is only one of two commemorative coins produced each year. The other coin in 2005 honored Supreme Court Justice John Marshall.

The coin features the iconic image of Marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima in 1945 on the "heads" side. The reverse sided pictures the Marine Corps eagle, globe and anchor emblem and the motto, "Semper Fidelis."

Proceeds from the sale of the coin will be applied to the Marine Corps Museum, which is being built near the Quantico Marine base in Virginia.

Commemorative coin sales since 1982 have raised more than $418 million for museums, monuments, historical sites and Olympic programs.
