MIAMI, April 20 (UPI) -- A delegation of Miami-Dade County, Fla., officials is in Washington this week in a campaign to keep the Pentagon's Southern Command in south Florida.
The four commissioners are talking with congressional leaders and the executive branch, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.
Southcom, with a staff of 1,200 military personnel and civilians, moved from Panama to south Florida in 1997. It is the command post for military operations in Latin America and the Caribbean.
There have been indications that the Pentagon is considering moving the operation to another location in the United States.
Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has offered to build a new headquarters on a site owned by the state near the current facility.
The group includes Commission Chairman Joe Martinez and Commissioners Dennis Moss, Jose "Pepe" Diaz and Katy Sorenson.
The delegation is scheduled to spend two days in Washington.
