Chernin won't replace Disney's Eisner

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Rumors veteran Hollywood executive Peter Chernin would replace Walt Disney Co.'s Michael Eisner have ended with Chernin extending his News Corp. deal.

News Corp. announced last week Chernin would stay on as president and chief operating officer of Rupert Murdoch's media empire for at least five more years, a role he took in 1996, IMDB.com reported Monday.

Dissatisfied Disney shareholders often have mentioned Chernin as one of the few executives who could replace Eisner, especially because Chernin's prior contract allowed him to leave if offered a position as head of another media company.

Chernin joined News Corp. in 1989 as president of entertainment of Fox Broadcasting Company.
