Sales of low carb foods are slimmer

WASHINGTON, May 18 (UPI) -- U.S. entrepreneurs who have bet on growing demand for low-carbohydrate foods are starting to feel a pinch, in their wallets, as demand slims down.

Participants at a trade convention, organized by industry trade publication LowCarbiz, in Washington recently told and heard stories of declining sales, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

"I do think now we're on the downside of the roller coaster -- and there will be ups again, but not as high," said Dean Rotbart, executive editor of LowCarbiz.

Entrepreneurs are hoping that the declining sales of low-carb foods will level off.

"It's kind of exploded, it's a trend, and then it becomes, really, a niche," said Michael E. Diegel, a spokesman for the Grocery Manufacturers of America Inc. "That's where it looks like it's going at this point."
