Judge sends Tyco jury home for now

NEW YORK, March 26 (UPI) -- The judge in the New York Tyco corruption trial sent the jury home Friday for the weekend after the panel said it could not continue deliberations.

The jurors, who had earlier informed the judge they could no longer discuss the case in good faith, must return Monday to make another attempt at reaching a verdict in the closely watched trial, CNN reported.

After hearing the pleas from the three-woman, nine-man panel, New York State Supreme Court Judge Michael Obus held out little hope of a verdict. However, he refused to declare a mistrial, hoping the jurors might do better after a weekend of rest.

Obus denied a second defense request for a mistrial.

Tyco Chief Executive L. Dennis Kozlowski and former Chief Financial Officer Mark Swartz are accused of bilking the company out of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the 32-count indictment. If found guilty, each faces up to 30 years in prison.
