He then flew off to dress a couple of Oscar hopefuls.

Ford recreated his finest moments with new panache and the crowd loved it. He told the International Herald Tribune he felt emotional, "But, I believe in a stiff upper lip and I am trying to hold it all back."

Ford said his dream when he started designing for Gucci was to create a look that was "slick and glamorous, filled with sexuality and sensuality." He accomplished that and recreated as his finale new versions of the iconic white jersey dresses clinging to the body that he had first shown in 1996.

The collection showed Ford's essential spirit and how he has refined it over 10 years, observers said. He called it "my best collection."

In Hollywood he will dress Academy Award nominees Charlize Theron in Gucci and Naomi Watts in Yves Saint Laurent.
