LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- The Walt Disney Co. says it plans to buy the Muppets and Bear in the Big Blue House from the Jim Henson Co. for an undisclosed sum.

The purchase does not include Sesame Street characters, owned by the Sesame Workshop, or other characters, films or television shows owned by Jim Henson Co, including "Fraggle Rock," "Farscape" and "The Dark Crystal."

The Jim Henson Co. will collaborate with Disney to among other things help Disney develop new shows and movies with the characters.

Disney said Tuesday it plans to create new television specials and a series featuring the Muppets, BizJournals.com reports.

Jim Henson apparently discussed selling the Muppets to Disney shortly before his death in 1990. Germany's EM.TV bought Henson's company in February 2000 for $680 million. The Henson family bought it back in July 2003 for $78 million.
