CHICAGO, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A full-blown investigation into the possibility 1970s serial killer John Wayne Gacy had an accomplice would be too costly, an Illinois sheriff said.
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says he has told his investigators to look into the theory, which was raised recently by a pair of attorneys who don't believe Gacy, who was executed in 1994, could have committed some of his 33 murders without a hand from someone else, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Dart called the accomplice scenario "interesting" but cautioned his department's current caseload and budget constraints would not allow him to launch a full-blown investigation. "Our goal is not to disprove this but go through their information to see whether it's true," Dart said.
Dart recently launched a new effort to identify Gacy's seven unidentified victims. A detective was dispatched to Iowa Friday to interview the family of an 8th man considered a possible Gacy victim, the newspaper said.
