JaMarcus Russell, Oakland Raiders settle

JaMarcus Russell last took the field for the Oakland Raiders in January 2010, but he's just now getting his last paycheck.

The Raiders are handing Russell $3 million in a contract settlement, the final resolution to a dispute that started when Oakland released him after three disappointing seasons, during which he struggled to maintain playing weight.

Russell was signed in 2007 as the team's No. 1 overall draft pick. He had been paid $36.4 million and was owed $3 million when Oakland waived him in May 2010.

The team's action set off a three-year contract dispute, in which Oakland filed a grievance contending the contract had been changed and Russell owed the team $9.55 million in salary advances returned. Russell countered with a grievance stating he was owed $9 million from the team.

Russell lost his starting job as quarterback in 2009, leaving with a record of 7-18 as a starter. He has reportedly lost 50 pounds from his heaviest, at one point weighing 300 pounds, and is trying to mount a comeback to the sport.
