MIAMI, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Miss Florida Shauna Pender was in critical condition Saturday after undergoing surgery for injuries she suffered in a traffic accident near Miami.
Pender, 24, was injured when a tractor-trailer rolled over onto the Lincoln Town Car that was taking her to a charity event Friday, the Miami Herald reported Saturday.
Police said Pender was riding with two other women and a 5-year-old girl when a white Ford pickup veered into their lane and caused the Lincoln to swerve out of control.
The semi also swerved and tipped over onto the Town Car. Pender had to be cut from the wreckage with the Jaws of Life.
Police Saturday were seeking the driver of the pickup, which kept going after the wreck.
No one else besides Pender suffered life threatening injuries, police said.
Pender became Miss Florida after the reigning state beauty queen won the Miss America pageant in September.
