Baltimore Orioles' Manny Machado makes super human throw from third base

By Alex Butler

June 18 (UPI) -- Third baseman Manny Machado made an eighth inning throw look way too easy in the Baltimore Orioles win Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Jedd Gyorko was at the plate when he worked a 3-2 count against Orioles arm Mychal Givens. The right-handed hitter pulled a ball over the third base bag, before it bounced into foul territory. He scampered to first base, looking like he would make it in safely for a single.

But Machado had other ideas.

The burly hot corner king corralled the ball off of the bounce, drifted into foul territory and fired it across his body, while fading away. The dart landed safely in the mitt of first baseman Trey Mancini for the third out of the inning.

"To make it even better, I had a good look at it. It's probably foul. It's probably a foul ball," Orioles manager Buck Showalter told MLB.com. "So, yeah. The most amazing thing is the throw and the velocity he can create from that arm angle. I was talking to Brian Butterfield, the third-base coach of the Red Sox, he was talking about how he's got a first-class seat there. One of the differences is the velocity and arm strength [Machado] can create from different slots and throw accurately."

"Think about the bar that he has set for himself. I can't say it now, but when I'm through, one day I'll tell you how I really feel about where he rates, comparatively speaking."

Machado also went 2-for-5 with a double, his 13th home run of the season and two RBI in the Orioles' 15-7 win.

The three-time All-Star was a 2013 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year at third base. Baltimore (33-34) hosts the final game of the 1-1 series at 1:35 p.m. Sunday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
