Apple computer unveils mini-stores

CUPERTINO, Calif., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Capitalizing on the success of its iPod music players and laptops California-based Apple Computer is set to open six stainless steel and white mini-stores.

Apple's new stores will be 750-square-feet, about half the size of the smallest of the computer company's 84 retail stores in the United States, and will make a design statement reflecting the iPod theme with stainless steel walls and seamless white floors and ceilings.

Apple has 93 retail stores worlewide.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the mini-stores are designed to be small, and cool because they are small. Jobs made his first public appearance since cancer surgery in July.

The first mini-stores open to the public Saturday in Palo Alto, San Jose and Santa Rosa, Calif.; Tukwila, Wash.; Bridgewater, N.J., and Rockaway, N.J., with a full line of iPods, iMac computers, iBooks, PowerBooks, Power Macs and thire-party products, Apple said.

Consumers this weekend downloaeed the 150 millionth song from Apple's iTunes Music Store since its launch in May2003.
