Economic projects for women only in Saudi

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia is contemplating having economic projects run exclusively by women based on the success of some private companies.

Labor Ministry Director General Ahmed Abdel Rahman Mansour said Monday an estimated 70,000 women have higher education degrees and qualifications to to enable them to participate in various businesses.

"Many food factories are planning to depend on women in their production," he said.

Mansour said Saudi women will be encouraged to work and become more productive as long as they can remain separated from men.

Many Saudi liberals are fighting to secure human rights for women.

Saudi women are obligated to wear the veil and are banned from driving, traveling alone without their husbands, fathers or brothers, and working in public.
