Romanian truck explosion kills at least 16

MIHAILESTI, Romania, May 24 (UPI) -- A truck explosion Monday has killed at least 16 people in Romania, the BBC reported.

The truck, which was carrying ammonium nitrate fertilizer, overturned in a pre-dawn accident and exploded after fire and rescue workers had arrived at the scene, 43 miles south of Budapest in Mihailesti.

Romania's Junior Health Minister Aurel Nechita said at least seven firefighters, two reporters and two police officers -- including the chief of the Mihailesti police -- were among the dead.

The number of injured was not immediately released.

An investigation into the cause of the crash was under way.
